Voice of the Brethren: A Study on Humility, for a Leader on the Eve of His Birthday

Happy Birthday Eduardo Manalo

Brethren and countrymen, tomorrow the chapels will overflow with greetings.

There will be choirs rehearsed to perfection, tarpaulins stretched across facades, videos compiled from districts around the world, and an extraordinary outpouring of praise directed toward one man on the anniversary of his birth. And so today, before the festivities drown everything out, allow me to open the Scriptures — not to attack anyone, but to reveal what the Bible asks of every man who stands at the head of God’s people:

When the praise comes, where does he point it?

That single question, brethren, separates the true shepherd from the hireling. It separated Moses from Korah, David from Absalom, Peter from Herod. And it will separate them again in our time, because God has not changed: “For I am the Lord—I do not change. That is why you are not already utterly destroyed, for my mercy endures forever.” ~ Malachi 3:6 TLB.

I will name no one in the study that follows. I will only read the Book. And by the time we close it, you will find — as I did — that no naming is necessary.

The Men Who Refused the Glory

Begin with Moses, the man who led the first nation of God out of bondage. No servant of God was ever handed more reason for vanity — plagues at his word, a sea parted before him, bread falling from heaven on his watch. Yet the Scriptures’ verdict on him is this: “Now Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person on earth.” ~ Numbers 12:3 NLT. When his own calling came, his first words were not “I am worthy”. But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?“ ~ Exodus 3:11 NLT. Even when his face shown after speaking with God, Moses did not claim that radiance as his own. It came from the presence of the Lord, and to the Lord belonged the glory. ~ Exodus 34:33-35.

Look at Joseph, standing before Pharaoh with the power to become indispensable in a single sentence. Instead: “I can’t do it by myself,” Joseph replied, “but God will tell you what it means!“ ~ Genesis 41:16 TLB. Look at Daniel before Nebuchadnezzar, offered the credit for revealing the king’s dream: “This secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living… but there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets“ ~ Daniel 2:28-30 TLB. Look at Gideon, offered a dynasty by a grateful nation: “I will not rule over you, nor will my son. The Lord will rule over you!“ Judges 8:23 NLT. A whole kingdom, declined on the spot — because a true leader of God’s people knows the throne was never vacant.

And the psalmist, gives us the anthem of every true servant: “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness“ ~ Psalm 115:1 NLT.

And in the time of Christ: John the Baptist, with multitudes at the Jordan ready to follow him anywhere, he directed his followers toward Christ — “He must increase, but I must decrease“ ~ John 3:30. Peter, when Cornelius fell at his feet in reverence, “took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man“ ~ Acts 10:26. Paul and Barnabas, when the crowds at Lystra tried to offer them sacrifices as gods, tore their own clothes in protest and cried out, “We are merely human beings like yourselves!“ ~ Acts 14:14-15 TLB. Even the angel in the Revelation, when John fell down to worship at his feet, refused it twice: “No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers the prophets, as well as all who obey what is written in this book. Worship only God!“ ~ Revelation 22:9 NLT.

Do you see the pattern, brethren? Not one of them scheduled the adoration. Not one of them sat still while it was offered. Every genuine messenger in the Holy Scriptures treated the glory of God like what it is — a thing too holy to possess.

The Example Above All Examples

And then there is the Messiah Himself.

Here was the one being who ever walked this earth with an actual claim to honour — and the crowds knew it. After he fed the five thousand, the people were ready to seize him: “When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone“ ~ John 6:15. They came to crown him, and he walked away from the coronation.

When they followed him for the loaves and the miracles, he corrected their very motive: “I am telling you the truth: you are looking for me because you ate the bread and had all you wanted, not because you understood my miracles.“ ~ John 6:26-27 GNT. When a man addressed him merely as “Good Master,” he deflected even that courtesy upward: “Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God“ ~ Matthew 19:17. He said plainly, “I receive not honour from men“ ~ John 5:41, and “I seek not mine own glory“ ~ John 8:50, and he gave us the test by which every preacher until the end of time may be measured:

“Those who speak on their own authority are trying to gain glory for themselves. But he who wants glory for the one who sent him is honest, and there is nothing false in him“ — John 7:18 GNT

The Lord himself tells you how to spot a true servant: follow the glory. Watch where the glory is directed. God is true. The one who allows it to gather at his own feet is NOT.

The Other Spirit: Those Who Demanded It

The Bible shows us the other kind of leader too — and it shows us how they end.

Korah rose up against Moses craving prominence that was not given him, and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed him alive ~ Numbers 16. Absalom prepared “chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him“ and stood at the gate stealing the hearts of the people with flattery — and in his vanity “reared up for himself a pillar… and called the pillar after his own name” ~ 2 Samuel 15:1-6; 18:18. He ended hanging from a tree by the very hair he gloried in. Saul, told to wait upon God, instead “set him up a monument for himself“ ~ 1 Samuel 15:12, ASV — he erected a monument for himself, and the prophet Samuel declared that God has rejected him as King. Nebuchadnezzar walked his palace roof declaring, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built… by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?“ — and “while the word was in the king’s mouth,” God drove him from men to eat grass like an ox ~ Daniel 4:30-33. Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne while the people shouted, “It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.“ He did not stop them. He drank it in. “And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms“ ~Acts 12:21-23.

And what always, always accompanies this hunger for reverence? Follow the money—the Bible did, thousands of years before I ever wrote an exposé. Samuel’s own sons “but they were not like their father, for they were greedy for money. They accepted bribes and were very corrupt in the administration of justice“ ~ 1 Samuel 8:3 TLB. The prophet Micah thundered against leaders of God’s nation in words that could have been written this morning: “you leaders who take bribes; you priests and prophets who won’t preach and prophesy until you’re paid. (And yet you fawn upon the Lord and say, “All is well—the Lord is here among us. No harm can come to us.”“ ~ Micah 3:11 TLB. And Isaiah — read this one slowly: “Your leaders are rebels and friends of thieves; they are always accepting gifts and bribes. They never defend orphans in court or listen when widows present their case“ ~ Isaiah 1:23 GNT.

Demanded glory. Loved payoffs. Neglected the widow and the fatherless. Scripture repeated places these three sins beside one another, warning us that the hunger for power and personal gain can flourish where justice, mercy, and humility have been abandoned.

God Reads the Heart — and He Has Already Ruled on Pride

Perhaps someone is thinking: but the man is pleasant in the videos; he weeps at the prayers; the brethren around him testify of his goodness. Brethren, the testimony of courtiers has never once been admissible in God’s court. “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart“ ~ 1 Samuel 16:7 NLT.

And on the proud heart, the verdict is already published:

“Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.“ ~ Proverbs 16:5

Throughout this study, I have named no contemporary leader. I have have simply laid the scriptures before you. But you, dear brethren still inside — you who are made to practice the songs, print the tarpaulins, and rehearse the greetings — you already know whose face you saw on every verse. Measure what you will witness tomorrow against John 7:18. Watch whom the glory is offered, whose name they shout and exalt n their prayers. Do not repeat the oldest mistake in Scripture: the worship of a man in the house built for God.

There Is Still Time — That Is Why I Write

The same Bible that records the destruction of the proud also records this: “Do you think I enjoy seeing evil people die?” asks the Sovereign Lord. “No, I would rather see them repent and live“ ~ Ezekiel 18:23 NLT. Even Manasseh — a king whose corruption of God’s house exceeded anything we write about on this website — “But while in deep distress, Manasseh sought the Lord his God and sincerely humbled himself before the God of his ancestors. And when he prayed, the Lord listened to him and was moved by his request. So the Lord brought Manasseh back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh finally realized that the Lord alone is God!“  ~ 2 Chronicles 33:12-13 NLT.

So I will do what no rehearsed birthday video will do, and say it plainly: Brother Eduardo V. Manalo, if these words ever reach you beyond those who surround you, there is still time.

If it is according to God’s will, may you, and all who have allowed the praise of men to overshadow the glory of God, find the humility to examine yourselves, repent where repentance is needed, and return to what is good in His sight.

You know what Scripture calls good, for it is written:

“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” — James 1:27

Consider the widows, the fatherless, and the brethren whose suffering has been documented on these pages over the years. Where wrongs have been committed, let them be acknowledged. Where families have been divided, let reconciliation be sought. Where injustice has occurred, let justice and mercy prevail.

And above all, let every honor received become an occasion to glorify the Almighty Father, to whom all glory ultimately belongs.

May the commemoration of your birth not become another festival of adoration, but a turning point—the day the veil is drawn over the face, the crown is declined upon the mountain, and the man rises to say, as Peter once said, “Stand up; I myself also am a man.“

And if not — then may the Almighty Father have mercy on your soul.

A Postscript, Before I Close

On another note: I received an email recently that, I confess, I was not sure I would ever feature on these pages. The approach is… not mine. Where I bring case numbers, he brings visual punchlines. But who am I to deny a brother his expression? Despite the differences in our approaches or styles, his “comedic” observations point to the same truths this blog sees — he simply laughs where I cite.

To Brother MJ: thank you. I appreciate both your courage and your creativity. And knowing the concerns that have been documented on these pages over the years, I urge you to exercise wisdom and discretion. Guard your privacy carefully, just as I have sought to guard mine throughout these eleven years.

Dear Brother AE,

I am a current church officer in the Church and currently hold multiple church office positions in our Locale congregation and District office. I have been in denial for a long time and I must admit, I was one of the people tasked by the Church Administration thru our select organization to hunt you down and disrupt your blog and reach. We have been successful for a while, but you were able to spring back to life and that’s when I finally start reading your blog articles thoroughly and did my own research. Needless to say, despite my denial due to my ego and pride. But with God’s guidance, I was finally enlightened to the grim reality that the church now is no longer the same as it was re-established during the time of Brother Felix Manalo and Brother Eraño Manalo. If only I can meet you in person, I would like to apologize to you for everything that I have done when I agreed to be part of the instruments of the Church Administration to use my knowledge and skills to hack into a lot of the Defenders’ accounts to track them down and persecute them. I honestly thought that I was doing a holy service to God to purge this earth of “the enemies” of the church. Only when I solemnly prayed to God for Him to guide my heart to find the truth did I finally see everything. This is something I cannot share with my own family as they have all become blind followers or fanatics of Bro. Eduardo Manalo. Now, I am using my knowledge to create something that will hopefully pave the way for more people to see the truth using technology and social media in a way that is with the changing times.

One thing that I admire you for is your honorable conduct in battle. You do not fight the lies with obscene name calling and petty mockery. You deviate from nonsense personality bashing and just focus on the topic of the truth. You are respectful even when you refer to the idiocracies of this current church administration and their yes-men ministers. And above all, you do not attack the church doctrines, only revealed the abuses of the church administration as they twist it to their vested interests. I honestly do not know if you will publish this in your article or show my video as I know that this is really not your style of exposing the truth. I have known your writings for a very long time, I actually downloaded all of them before we shut down your site before. But I hope that you will allow me the opportunity to use my knowledge to rectify what I have done in the past. I have prepared a video for a music that you have featured before. I believe that this satire will both offend the ignorant and the blind, and inspire the others like me who are just at the crossroads but are awake and aware of the truth. This is the start, a tribute to the man himself, Brother Eduardo V. Manalo as the whole EVM-dom celebrates his birthday and offer all their praises and adoration to EVM-almighty.

Again, thank you po for all that you do and I hope many more people will continue to be enlightened by the work that you, and other like you, have started. Please hide my true identity for now, I’m sure they will find out who I truly am soon enough.

Your brother in Christ,

Bro. MJ

“They tried to bury us…they didn’t know we were seeds.”

“Unlike you, I don’t have power or money, but what I do have is a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you tell the truth now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will expose you.” – A.E.
