Another Slam of the Gavel: INC’s Appeal Ends in Humiliating Defeat in the Canadian Court of Appeal

Another chapter in the long-running legal clash (since Feb. 11, 2019) between the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has ended the same way with another slam of the gavel. Too many of these attempts from this institution do: with the court shutting the door — firmly, clearly, and without confusion.
The appeal launched by the INC, following an earlier court loss on February 27, 2025, has now been firmly dismissed, reinforcing what the courts had already made clear: the case lacked sufficient merit to proceed further. Not “sent back for reconsideration.” Not “partly granted.” Not “worth a deeper look.” Dismissed. A clean, decisive outcome that reinforces what the court had already signaled: the case simply did not have the legal footing required to move forward.

A ruling that didn’t just reject the appeal—it exposed it

What makes this outcome particularly striking is not just the dismissal itself, but the decision to appeal in the first place. Appeals are meant to correct genuine errors in law or procedure, not to relitigate unfavorable outcomes in the hopes of a different result. By pursuing this route despite the clarity of the initial ruling, the INC exposed itself to further legal scrutiny—and ultimately, further defeat.

At the center of this development was the ruling of Justice Ken Champagne. The decision did more than deny the appeal; it underscored how shallow the arguments were and how unnecessary it was to attempt to revive issues that were already addressed. Extending the fight didn’t change the facts; it only increased the cost. Their cost!
And in this instance, the message from the justice system—untainted by clout, intimidation, or religious branding—was unmistakable: enough!

The miscalculation: doubling down on a dead end

Legal battles are expensive. Financially, emotionally, and reputationally. They consume time, attention, and resources. Choosing to extend a case already deemed insufficient only amplified those costs, without altering the outcome. Instead, the appeal’s dismissal has compounded the optics of the situation, turning what could have ended as a single loss into a repeated and public reaffirmation of that loss. So when an institution chooses to keep pushing a case the courts have already deemed insufficient, the question becomes unavoidable: who is paying for such costly persistence?

Because it’s rarely the leaders who feel the pinch, especially a cult-like church leader who sits on a high horse, engulfed in arrogance, entitlement, and pride.
It’s the ordinary members who pay the price. Literally. The ones constantly urged—sometimes pressured—to keep giving “voluntary” offerings. The ones who are told it’s for God, for the Church, for the mission. Any sign of hesitation or defiance automatically makes one a TARGET!  Yet somehow, a huge portion of that sacrifice ends up fueling frivolous legal maneuvers that collapse upon contact with an impartial court.

If anyone sat in on these proceedings—even someone unfamiliar with the case’s long history—they likely wouldn’t even struggle to identify what’s really happening. When the arguments are this strained and borderline ridiculous, you don’t need a decade of background to recognize who is embarrassingly at fault. You only need ears…. and common sense.

And no, not even “all the money in the world” can purchase a favorable ruling when the law isn’t on your side, especially in Canada and in the US.

When the whole church’s prayers go unanswered

Isn’t it ironic that the Church Administration can rally the entire membership to pray for “favorable decisions” every time another case is filed—yet the results keep landing the same way: dismissed, denied, rejected, and in the process, exposing the institution to even greater scrutiny and humiliation on a global stage?
If prayer is treated like a tool to protect pride, to preserve image, or to silence accountability, then it’s no longer prayer in the biblical sense. It becomes a religious performance—asking God to bless a malicious agenda rather than asking God to correct a misguided heart.
Scripture explains why such prayers don’t bear the fruit cult-like church leaders expect:
You ask [God for something] and do not receive it, because you ask [c]with wrong motives [out of selfishness or with an unrighteous agenda], so that [when you get what you want] you may spend it on your [hedonistic] desires… But He gives us more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, “God is opposed to the proud and haughty, but [continually] gives [the gift of] grace to the humble [who turn away from self-righteousness].” ~ Proverbs 4:3,6 AMP
That’s the uncomfortable truth: God is not obligated to endorse anyone’s legal strategy, public relations campaign, or institutional ego—no matter how many people are instructed to pray for it. When motives are corrupt, outcomes have a way of becoming corrective and lead to the inevitable… failure and disgrace.
Pride leads to destruction, and arrogance to downfall. ~ Proverbs 16:18 GNT

When prideful leaders act as though they are untouchable—shielded by influence, money, or fear—they often end up proving the opposite. The justice system, when functioning as it should, has a way of stripping away theatrics and leaving only substance. And when there is but very little substance, the outcome is utter humiliation.

When a religious institution insists it is the sole recipient of salvation while simultaneously practicing intimidation, persecution, and suppression of dissent, it isn’t just contradicting critics—it is contradicting God’s direct commandments.

A message to those still on the fence: don’t confuse silence with faith

To anyone still torn between standing for what is right and staying silent out of fear: continue to pray for spiritual guidance, clarity, courage, and endurance. I cannot tell you what to do. Only the Holy Spirit can make that clear to you. And when it does, it will be up to you alone to determine whether you will follow it or find reasons not to. The choice will always be up to us, and no one else.
Faithfulness is not measured by how well you obey men who demand unquestioning loyalty. Faithfulness is measured by obedience to God—by truth, humility, justice, mercy, and love.
If you are being pressured into silence, if you are being threatened for asking questions, if you are being punished for speaking truthfully—understand this: that is not the fruit of righteousness.
And if you are relying on a false sense of security behind a cult-like institution that claims exclusive salvation while acting as an agent of oppression, then you are not safe. You are managed by an institution that gives you false hopes and a false sense of righteousness.

Pray for the victims—and trust God’s justice

Continue to pray for those who have been harmed by injustice, persecution, and oppression. Pray for those who have been isolated, smeared, threatened, or made to feel that their suffering is “God’s will” when it is plainly the result of human cruelty.

God is the one leading His people. No one can stand in His way.
Today’s outcome is another reminder that God does not forsake His children who remain faithful to Him. The courts have spoken decisively, and the truth has been defended in a system not governed by religious intimidation.

A Final Note

The next question is simple: will Eduardo V. Manalo finally pause long enough to reflect, repent, and humble himself before God—asking not for a “win,” but for correction and the courage to make amends? Or will we see yet another round of legal theatrics, another barrage of filings, and sue the whole Canadian and United States Justice System for not conforming to his perverted version of justice?

I’d strongly suggest EVM take this all the way to the Supreme Court next—heck, why not ask for a grand jury too? Who knows, maybe they’ll convene one to make him feel special.
